Hub Stories: Ex-Firefighter Crunches Numbers to Stop Climate Change

[Name]: Dermot Hikisch
[Areas of Expertise]: Corporate sustainability, Third party evaluation, Business Development, Forest Ecology

[Memory Lane]:

“One of my earliest memories is from a hot summer in Canada, where there was a major forest fire that broke out twenty miles from my parent’s house. There’s this one photo of me where I’m standing in the little kids paddle pool and there’s a giant column of smoke behind me and I have this little hat on and I’m smiling away, half toothless, just a beautiful 90 degree day. Later that summer we got our first cat, and I named the cat “Smoky” and that always stuck with me. Fortunately, I was able to live one of my two childhood dreams: I didn’t go to the moon or anything, but I fought forest fires for eight years. The camaraderie of working in that industry was really fun, but it was also a nice step into ecology and conservation.” Continue reading

Hi HUB community,

When I was in the 8th grade, I transferred middle schools, and when they found out that there were 3 Christina’s in our classroom, we all got a nickname. I was into Hello Kitty at the time, and over the year, I became Cat.

Hub San Francisco Weekly Roll Up: Reboot for Summer

Hey Hubbers

You may have noticed an absence in last week’s Roll Up…my apologies. I had a bit of family time down in the tropics, but don’t worry, I was thinking of you the whole time!

The fog out my window tells me that the SF summer is upon us! Thus, there are quite a few young new faces around the space. Though many of you more experienced Hubbers will be taking a bit of a holiday yourselves, I would encourage you to reach out to the next generation of social entrepreneurs. There is much to learn on both sides. Continue reading

Hub Stories: Mercy Corps’ Development Officer Challenges Changemakers to Examine our Giving Habits

[Name]: Mary Tam

[Areas of Expertise]: Fundraising, Community Development, International Relief

[Memory Lane]:

While interning in Kyrgyzstan, I learned about some of the logistical challenges of doing programming abroad. If you’re doing cash distribution, you can’t just acquire the money and hand it out to a bunch of people. You have to be really strategic about who’s getting the money. It’s ideal to have two waiting areas to manage the flow– because if you don’t people tend to flood in and crowd the table. That’s not a comment on other countries– the same thing would happen here. It’s just people. I ride the N in the morning, I see what happens! Continue reading

Hub San Francisco Weekly Roll Up: Summer Comes!

Hey Hubbers,

Last weekend I saw a great movie called Pelada. It was a documentary about a couple from the US traveling the world looking for pick-up games of soccer. And they found games: in the alleys, in the fields, in the desert, in the prisons. I couldn’t help thinking of the global aspect of the Hub. With 30 Hubs worldwide, everywhere you go, you find people starting businesses that build a better world. So, if your summer plans are taking you out of the country, check the website, or check in with a host to see if there are folks to meet where you are going. Chances are, the Hub will have a connection for you.

Here in SF, Hub Bay Area is running a summer program with Impact Corps. We will be providing an opportunity for the next generation of talent to pursue their interests within the impact sector.  Impact-U is a three month weekend membership that provides current graduate and undergraduate upperclassman students an environment to build their network, knowledge-base and/or start-up company. If you have other questions, please email u@impactcorps.com. Continue reading
