Hub Berkeley Weekly Roll-Up: All for One and One for All

All joking and faux rivalries aside, it’s time for Hub Berkeley and Hub SoMa to bury the proverbial hatchet and recognize that we all play for the same team.  This week we have a chance to literally do just that and cross the most formidable border of the Bay Area–the intimidating and fortress-like Bay Bridge–to recognize our common humanity.

First, as you may have heard, the Hub is competing with Net Impact to see whose members do the most good.  Thanks to Hub member Lloyd Nimitz’s platform Blitz Bazaar, Hub members can log all their good deeds online, receive points for them, and compete with Net Impact members doing the same.  We need your help to prove that Hub members do more good than anybody else.  Join the fun here.

If the threat of being defeated by an outside force doesn’t solidify your bond with fellow Hubsters across the Bay, then perhaps drinking and cavorting with them will.  This Thursday Hub SoMa is hosting our second monthly Member Mixer (!), where you can meet fellow Hub members, hear what they’re up to, and generally be inspire-gized by their amazingness (thanks to CoFed for the new vocabulary word).  Sign up here (password for members to register is JulyHubMixer).

If you don’t mix well with SoMa Hub members for other reasons, you might want to check out Mark Baril’s office hours on managing change and conflict this Thursday.  (And on a completely unrelated note, I also suggest you check out the Business Model Bar Camp happening this Wednesday with Alex Osterwalder, author of Business Model Generation.  And next Tuesday we’re hosting Hub Fast Pitch, a chance for 4 members to hone their pitches and get feedback from a small group of investors and Hub members.  Write calgary.brown@the-hub.net if you’re interested in pitching or just join us at noon in the Hubble to observe.)

I think I’ve mentioned before that I didn’t used to be one for team spirit.  But when you’re on a team as awesome as the Hub, well, you have to make some exceptions.

This Week

Sexy Salad

Wednesday, July 28, 12pm-1pm, Hubble Meeting Room, Hub Berkeley

(Open to the Public)  Sexy Salad is officially a Hub tradition every Wednesday!  Join us this Wednesday to relax, eat, chat, and get to know other amazing Hub members–entrepreneurs, freelancers, academics, funders, leaders, movers and shakers working for good.   We’re now inviting potential members to join us for some salad and check out what the Hub community is all about.

Participation is easy: just show up, bring an ingredient, and learn how tasty collaboration can be.  Need ideas?  How about spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, almonds, apples, or your favorite salad dressing.  Bring bread or spread or pasta or potato salad.  Bring something you cooked and prepped or bought at the market on the way to work.  Most importantly, bring yourself!  Your mission: to prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  And best of all, no need to RSVP!

Thursday, July 29, 1:30pm-5:30pm, Hub Berkeley

(Members Only) Join conflict manager, facilitator, and mediator Mark Baril at Hub Berkeley for office hours that center on Managing Change and Conflicts in your business.

Having conflicts and managing change in your organization is normal and potentially very healthy when handled well. Some typical conflicts stem from; partnerships issues; personality conflicts; differing ideas on new directions; money issues; vendor contract issues; design and interpretation conflicts; team building; communication styles; combining cultures; ethical issues; and new business strain issues of many types.  Join Mark for private, confidential, and complimentary office hours that center on you, your organization, and a situation of your choosing. Through a proven process of asking the right questions and helping you explore your own answers, new ideas and directions are born.

Please RSVP for a specific time. Walk-ins are welcome if you have a flexible schedule.

Wine Down

Friday, July 30, 4:00pm, Hub Berkeley

(Members Only) Wine down is back!  Come work out of the Hub on Fridays then join us for an informal social hour (or however much you can spare) to decompress after a productive week, chat with other members, and transition to the weekend.  We’ll provide a bottle of wine, but feel free to bring more if you’re so moved.

Next Week:

Sexy Salad

Wednesday, August 4, 12pm-1pm, Hubble Meeting Room, Hub Berkeley

(Open to the Public)  See description above.

Hub Fast Pitch

Tuesday, August 3, 12pm-1pm, Hubble Meeting Room

(Open to the public)  Calling all social entrepreneurs!  Are you looking for an opportunity to work on your presentation skills and hone your elevator pitch?  Would you like to hear more about the work of Hub members and others in the Bay Area?  If so, please join us for the kick off of a new lunch series called Hub Fast Pitch.

During these one hour lunch sessions, four social entrepreneurs will be invited to pitch their ideas to a small audience of Hub members and guests, and then receive helpful feedback.  Think of this as a “dress rehearsal” to hone your skills before presenting to actual investors.

The sessions will be facilitated by folks with both for-profit and non-profit funding experience, and all types of organizations are encouraged to participate.  Time is limited to four pitches per session, so we will schedule these on a first come, first serve basis.

Moving forward, we will have bi-weekly sessions alternating between Hub location, so stay tuned for upcoming dates.  If you’re interested in participating in Hub Fast Pitch, please email Wes Selke and Calgary Brown at wes @goodcap.net and calgary .brown@the-hub.net .

Wine Down

Friday, August 6, 4:00pm, Hub Berkeley

[Hub SoMa] Member Mixer!

Thursday, July 29, 6:30pm-8:30pm, Hub SoMa

(Members Only) Hub Bay Area is organizing a monthly mixer for members to meet one another, catch up with each other, and generally bask in the amazingness that is the Hub community.  We’ll have some spare wine to get the evening off to a good start, but please bring some drinks to share!

We encourage members to share to the larger group what their up to, so if you’d like 5 mins of fame, please email calgary.brown@the-hub.net.  We’re only going to have a few people get up and say something, so first come, first serve and you have to be a Hub member!   Additionally, there will be opportunities to table at this mixer.  Again, we’ll have a limited amount of tables, first come, first serve for members only.  Contact calgary.brown@the-hub.net for more details.  To register, click here.
