Hub Weekly Roll-Up: Versailles, Waffles, and What Ifs

What happens when a community of Vietnamese refugees in New Orleans gets threatened with displacement by a toxic landfill after Hurricane Katrina?  What happens is those refugees organize themselves to turn a devastating disaster into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future.  See the story unfold this Wednesday at Hub movie night when we show A Village Called Versailles and hold a Q&A afterward with the film’s associate producer and community organizer Loan Dao.

What happens when a successful triple-bottom-line blog shares its expertise with curious Hub members?  Hub members get their burning questions about social media answered and find out how to submit a guest post to the popular blog Triple Pundit.

What happens when changemakers get their hands on all-you-can-eat waffles on an otherwise dreary Monday morning?  Breakthroughs happen, that’s what.  Game changing, disruptive, and leapfrogging innovations happen, fueled by Isolde’s secret waffle recipe and lots and lots of syrup.

What happens when the Hub starts humming with the conversations of diverse social innovators, all seeking solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems?  We’re just beginning to find out.  Come by the Hub and see for yourself.

(Open to the Public)  Sexy Salad is officially a Hub tradition every Wednesday!  Join us this Wednesday to relax, eat, chat, and get to know other amazing Hub members–entrepreneurs, freelancers, academics, funders, leaders, movers and shakers working for good.   We’re now inviting potential members to join us for some salad and check out what the Hub community is all about.

Participation is easy: just show up, bring an ingredient, and learn how tasty collaboration can be.  Need ideas?  How about spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, almonds, apples, or your favorite salad dressing.  Bring bread or spread or pasta or potato salad.  Bring something you cooked and prepped or bought at the market on the way to work.  Most importantly, bring yourself!  Your mission: to prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  And best of all, no need to RSVP!

Movie Night: A Village Called Versailles

Wednesday, April 28, 6:30pm-8:30pm, Hub Berkeley

(Hub Members and Invited Guests Only) From saving dolphins in Japan to New Orleans, this month we will show “A Village Called Versailles”, a documentary that tells the struggle of Vietnamese-American refugees in New Orleans fighting to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina, only to have their homes threatened by a new government-imposed toxic landfill. It is the empowering story of how the Versailles people, who have already suffered so much in their lifetime, turn a devastating disaster into a catalyst for change and a chance for a better future.  Loan Dao, associate producer of the movie and community liaison/organizer, will be on hand for a Question and Answer session afterwards.   The website for the film is www.avillagecalledversailles.com.  Please RSVP to meredith.walters@the-hub.net.

Social Justice Working Group Meeting

Thursday, May 6, 6:30pm-8:00pm, Hub Berkeley

(Open to the Public)  17 community leaders from around the Bay Area convened at the first meeting of the Social Justice Working Group at Hub Berkeley last month.  We discussed how a group of people with strong roots in the local movement for social justice could work together to accomplish more than any one person or organization could do alone.  We talked about what such a group could work on as well as who should be involved and how it would operate.  People got excited about the possibility of working on a social justice forum and decided to meet again to flush out the idea in more detail.  Join us for this second meeting of the Social Justice Working Group and learn about the forum idea, give your input, and help create a platform for collaboration to further social justice in the Bay Area.
