From free legal consultations to one-on-one search marketing strategy sessions (including a free website code review!), there’s a lot to take advantage of this week at The Hub. I keep saying that, but it keeps being true. Don’t get overwhelmed by the events listed below, though: be sure to scroll down to the news sections and read about a Hub member contest for a new social venture in need of a name. Also check out Hub4Haiti and find out how you can help raise money for Haiti just by having a few friends over for dinner.
This is my last roll-up before I leave for Hawaii next week (woohoo!), so I’ll have a substitute for the next edition. Hopefully she/he won’t make me look too bad. In the meantime, I hope to see you at The Hub this week!

(Members and members’ invited friends only) Sexy Salad is officially a Hub tradition every Wednesday! Join us this Wednesday to relax, eat, chat, and get to know your fellow Hub members. Bring an ingredient and learn how tasty collaboration can be. Need ideas? How about spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, almonds, apples, or your favorite salad dressing. Bring bread or spread or pasta or potato salad. Bring something you cooked and prepped or bought at the market on the way to work. Most importantly, bring yourself! Your mission: to prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And best of all, no need to RSVP!

Brownbag Lunch: New Year/New Body with Chef Joni Sare
Thursday, January 28, 12pm-1pm, Hubble Meeting Room, Hub Berkeley
(Members only) Join us for a lunch to talk about starting the new year through healthy eating… learn which of 3 ways is best for you: cleansing, building or a balancing diet and how to choose foods to help – instead of hinder – your well-being. Joni will include a bit of physiology and biochemistry of the body. Please RSVP to email@example.com with one question (a short one, pertaining to the topic, please) that you’d like to have addressed during the meeting.
This will be a participatory luncheon: each participant will make a dish to share with the group. Joni will provide recipes one week before the event and each participant will choose one to make for the meal. During the luncheon we’ll talk through everyone’s process of making the dishes and what benefits they serve. The lunch will be followed by a meeting of the food justice working group.

(Non-members are welcome to check out one meeting; members only for ongoing involvement) Come meet other members working to create just food systems, plan food related events at The Hub, and brainstorm ways The Hub can help support the sector.
Hanson Bridgett Legal Huddle: A start-up’s best defense (and offense) is a good IP strategy

Thursday, January 28, 6:30pm-8:30pm, Hub Berkeley
(Open to the Public) Every startup must address its Intellectual Property (IP) at some point. The question is when? If you ignore your IP questions at the early stages, you do it at your financial peril. An early IP strategy that honestly addresses your goals and budget will protect your business in the long run. For this month’s Hanson Bridgett Legal Huddle, come hear Arman Javid, attorney at Hanson Bridgett, Alan Gunshor, Co-founder of Catzilla and Craig Flax, Founder and CEO of Good Things Green and the former EVP of Marketing at Flax Art & Design, speak about how to negotiate term sheets for convertible notes and equity investments. They’ll share their experiences and legal expertise with you to address how to prepare an early IP strategy and some common IP mistakes of start-ups. RSVP at http://legalhuddle3.eventbrite.com/.

Social Media Roundup Brownbag Lunch
Thursday, February 4, 12pm-1pm, Hubble Meeting Room, Hub Berkeley
(Members Only) Hub staff and volunteers are organizing a round table discussion on social media strategies and tools — primarily Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. This discussion will largely be shaped by the group, and we want it to be a space to learn from each other. Rebecca Petzel and Kristy Graves will lead the discussion, and both are involved in social media both personally and for the Hub. They plan on sharing things they’ve learned/are learning and go over some 101 knowledge, but also hope to learn from the group. Please join the discussion if you’ve been in the space and have experience/knowledge to contribute, or have just been wondering how (or need a nudge) to get started.
**Events in red are Hub-produced events. Events in black or gray are member-produced.
We wanted to do something to band together Hub members and their friends to support the relief effort for Haiti. Using the Hungry for Obama model, we are hoping to kick off a series of fundraising dinners. The idea is simple:
- We kick off with an inuagural potluck at the Hub and a few pre-planned dinners. We encourage folks to sign up and send the message to friends!
- At each dinner, a pre-set fundraising page on FirstGiving allows all guests to contribute a minimum of $25.
- We encourage all guests who attend a dinner to hold one of their own and keep the fundraising ball rolling!
Hub Communications Lab Looking to Expand
Hub members Kelli Peterson and Geoff Schwarten are leading the creation of the Hub Communications Lab, a place Hub members can come to work through marketing and communications needs. It’s a virtual and a real place to ask questions, gain insights and work through solutions with other Hub members who have professional experience in the communications field.
The model is initially focused on one-off workshops that will be given once monthly and will each month focus on a different channel of communications (PR, promotions, social media, SEO, web development, etc.). Kelli and Geoff have conducted three lunchtime workshops so far on brand strategy and online marketing and are interested in expanding their topic offerings.
If you work in communications and are interested in developing the Hub Communications Lab or offering a workshop to other Hub members, please write email@example.com.
Please help us welcome our new members:
